New Catholic prepubs
« on: January 19, 2012, 04:45:04 PM »
I'm starting a new thread where we can inform and ask about new Catholic prepubs (use the other thread for Vyrso books). These have been added today or recently:

Theodore of Mopsuestia: Commentary on the Minor Pauline Epistles
Aquinas Studies Collection (4 vols.)
Modern Catholic Social Teaching: Commentaries and Interpretations
Saints and Feasts of the Liturgical Year, rev. ed.
The Papal Encyclicals: 1740–1981 (5 vols.)

I find the Aquinas one somewhat misnamed. It seems to be restricted only to ethics, which a) means that I won't buy it, which I certainly thought I would when I saw the title, and b) means that when they come to publish a more comprehensive collection on Thomas, the most natural title is already gone. It would have been understandable if the books came from a series that already had this name, but that doesn't seem to be the case. When I searched one of the titles on Amazon it was said to belong to the Moral Traditions series. -- Andrew, if you see this, please help us now and yourself later by using more descriptive collection titles.

Is anyone familiar enough with the Social Teachings volume to be able to advice me as to how I should interpret the words I've italicized in this sentence: "With an equal emphasis on every word in the title—and with a distinctly American perspective—Himes and his distinguished associate editors and contributors, have assembled the most thorough and authoritative assessment of modern Roman Catholic social teaching to date, likely to remain the touchstone volume for decades"? If it's just a few pages about American reception history, that's fine, but I have no interest in reading Catholic social doctrine twisted into a song of praise for American Capitalism.

I forgot Community Pricing for some reason, so here are the latest [more or less] Catholic CPs:

The Book of the Popes (Liber Pontificalis)
Disciplinary Decrees of the General Councils: Text, Translation, and Commentary (Seems to include most of the texts from the medieval councils, which we're still sorely lacking in Logos.)
Patrologia Cursus Completus, Series Graeca, Part 1 (vols. 1–18)
Lewis and Short's Latin Dictionary (Includes medieval Latin)
Modern Doctors of the Church (26 vols.)
Classic Commentaries and Studies on the Song of Songs (24 vols.) (Includes A Commentary on the Song of Songs from Ancient and Medieval Sources, as well as one by Mme Guyon.)
The Works of T. W. Allies (16 vols.) (Mainly early church history.)
The Works of A. E. Breen (6 vols.) (Mainly biblical studies.)
Commentary on the Psalms from Primitive and Mediæval Writers (4 vols.)
Dictionary of Christian Antiquities (2 vols.)
The History of the Popes from the Close of the Middle Ages (40 vols.)
The Lives of the Popes in the Early Middle Ages (19 vols.)
Travels through Bible Lands Collection (15 vols.) (Includes a volume on Early Travels in Palestine.)
The Catholic Encyclopedia (17 vols.)

OK, that wasn't only the latest, that was more like all.  :)  I got ambitious, and I want them to move. So go put in your bids if you haven't before, and if the current bid is too high, then bid something lower, as long as you bid something. That's especially true about those two pope collections which have stalled completely. Even I won't pay that.

Thanks.  I had missed some of these, especially the CP ones.

Thanks.  I had missed some of these, especially the CP ones.
I do hope you didn't miss The Medieval Preaching and Spirituality Collection (34 vols.) which left CP a week or two ago. Great collection, but it's 3,5 times as much on prepub.

Since I seem to have been helpful to at least one person, and since I ended up making a fairly complete list of CPs, I guess I should try to go back in time with the prepub list as well (the ones with stars instead of dots have shipping dates set):

Catholic Practicum: Learn to Use Logos Bible Software (video course)
Encyclicals of Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI (34 vols.)
* The Works of Thomas à Kempis (7 vols.) (ex-CP)
The Medieval Preaching and Spirituality Collection (34 vols.) (ex-CP)
The Great Commentary of Cornelius à Lapide (8 vols.) (ex-CP)
Catholic Commentary on Sacred Scripture (7 vols.)
* Joseph Ratzinger/Pope Benedict XVI Collection (14 vols.)
Works of St. Cyril of Alexandria (6 vols.) (ex-CP)
Hans Urs von Balthasar Collection (16 vols.)
New American Bible, rev. ed. (NABRE) (included in some or all of the Catholic packages)
Nova Vulgata: Bibliorum Sacrorum Editio (included in some or all of the Catholic packages)
English-Greek Reverse Interlinear of the NRSV Apocryphal Texts (included in some or all of the Catholic packages)
* Liturgies Eastern and Western Collection (2 vols.) (included in some or all of the Catholic packages)
The Future of Christian Learning: An Evangelical and Catholic Dialogue
Second Corinthians (included in Catholic Commentary on Sacred Scripture above)
PBI New Testament Studies Collection (11 vols.)

I left out Spanish books and some very specialized PBI resources. And I am, of course, likely to have missed at least something in my fairly quick look through the pages.

Beware that Liber Pontificalis is moving through CP at record pace for a Catholic book. It's currently at 13th place and 70% after only two days, so it seems likely to close this week or the next.

I've got the Platinum Collection and perhaps $7K in additional resources.  Not long ago, after I picked up the Catholic Library Builder, I swore I'd start to ease up on the purchases.  That's just when Logos opened the Catholic book floodgates.  I am in line for the Midieval Preaching Collection, but it's been hard to keep track of everything that's coming down the pike!  Thanks again for the list.

The problem is guessing which ones you should let pass by. I let Butler, Newman and Pohle go by, which turned out to be a very smart decision when the Library Builder came. But how do I repeat that accomplishment?

Do you know you can go to Notifications on your account and check the boxes for CP's, prepubs, and Catholic resources (and whatever else interests you)? That way you'll get emails about things. Or you can use the RSS feeds for CPs and prepubs. The normal Twitter feed is useful as well, since that's where the Daily Deal at 50% off turns up. Not that it's been anything even remotely interesting for a long time now, but sooner or later something's got to turn up.

RE: " But how do I repeat that accomplishment?"
Joh 14:14  If you shall ask me any thing in my name, that I will do. DR.

Just take care what you ask for.  And thanks for all the work. Have some on my list.

It is indeed closing tomorrow, and will [presumably] go for $6. Don't miss out.

I guess this is kind of a Catholic prepub as well, and it desperately needs more orders:
There are quite a few Catholic journals on that list, and many many more of Catholic interest.

(There are even a few Swedish, Norwegian and Danish ones for me to amuse myself with  :)  -- if they ever get as far as shipping.)

I hadn't realized how much the abstracts were floundering. Rosie gave them a push when they  were first listed. What they really need is a push from some educational institution. I'll see if I can think of someone appropriate to push them.

Yes, they've really stalled, which is a shame. It's the 2nd last item in Gathering Interest, only a Czech Bible is worse! So if you can think of something, that would be great. Wish Logos would write a blog as well.

Finally, the one we've all been waiting for: the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

And, in case you've missed it, the Disciplinary Decrees of the General Councils: Text, Translation, and Commentary and the Travels through Bible Lands Collection (15 vols.) closes Friday, and the Commentary on the Psalms from Primitive and Mediæval Writers (4 vols.) looks like it very well might as well.

Ok we will get Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC)
(Is it the Second Edition?)

Now all we need is:
YouCat by Cardinal Christoph Schoenborn - a youth version of the CCC
[[http://community.logos.com/forums/p/23367/316122.aspx#316122]]

and The Companion to the Catechism of the Catholic Church: A Compendium of Texts Referred to in the Catechism of the Catholic Church Including an Addendum
[[http://community.logos.com/forums/p/23367/325656.aspx#325656]]

Any word????

The Modern Doctors of the Church (26 vols.) seems to have been renamed to Post-Reformation Catholic Thought and Piety (26 vols.). I have a faint suspicion one or two titles may have changed as well, but I'm not sure.

Since I listed Lewis & Short's lexicon due to its Patristic and Medieval Latin, I guess I should also have listed E. A. Sophocles Collection (4 vols.) due to its lexicon on Patristic Greek.
